In 2011 I started getting obsessed with gathering stones everywhere I went, and crocheting them into a large garment cloak I was taking to Iceland on a 5 week residency in 2012. I left many stones in Iceland from the Pacific Ocean, and filled a few pockets with some stones I found there and brought them home. The habit has continued everywhere I travel. In small ways, stones have worked their way into much of my work since, primarily because they seem to be intense collectors of memory. I feel the place I was when I found the stone, as it is a tiny piece of the land. Collecting and moving stones is rich in meaning, and spans a lot of different cultures. I created this project as a way for people to explore these ideas for themselves, as well as play with the technique of felting wool around a stone. So you end up with this very beautiful and curious object, both hard and soft, heavy and animal-like. I teach a very ‘wabi-sabi’ style of raw embroidery to add definition to simple geometric patterns in the felt. We’ll learn satin stitch, running stitch, back stitch and I have books of others.
I have a lot of great natural colors of wool from farms I visited around the state (even have pictures of some of the sheep the wool is from). And I have a variety of hand dyed and commercially produced jewel tones to layer. I also have raw fleeces we can hand card to use for our felting, so straight from the sheep to your project!
You also get to join in the warm studio atmosphere, with tea and snacks (and wine), and conversation with others in the class as you create. Many have come in groups of friends and left with more!
